The P. C. Somerville Awards for Future Teachers

(up to $1,000 each)

fuller

P. C. Somerville Awards, named in honor of Sigma Tau Delta’s first president, are for Sigma Tau Delta active members who will begin their first year of teaching elementary, middle, or high school English by 15 September following the application deadline. Applicants need not be under contract at the time of application, but winners must provide verification of the baccalaureate degree and of full-time employment (per instructions from the ΣΤ∆ Central Office) to receive their stipends. Should winners not be able to provide such verification by the beginning of the fall semester following their application process, their awards will be presented to runners-up. Applicants should demonstrate academic scholarship, chapter service and an aptitude for teaching. Awards are usually determined by March 31 and typically are announced at the annual convention. Each chapter may nominate up to three active members.

Scholarly Paper Awards (up to $150 each)

Sigma Tau Delta will award up to $150 each for the best undergraduate and best graduate student scholarly paper presented at a non-Sigma Tau Delta professional, academic conference. The paper must be on an English-related subject and have been presented at a conference between November 1, 2006 and October 30, 2007. Awards are usually determined by March 31 and typically are announced at the annual convention.

Junior/Senior/Graduate Scholarships ($2,000 each)

Sigma Tau Delta offers the following scholarships for undergraduates and graduate students: the Junior Scholarships, in honor of E. Nelson James, long-time Sigma Tau Delta Executive Secretary; the Senior Scholarships, in honor of Elva Bell McLin, past Southern Regent and society Historian; and the Graduate Scholarships, in honor of Edwin L. Stockton, Jr., past-president who served for 18 years. Applicants apply for these scholarships based on their level of college: juniors apply during their junior year, seniors apply during their senior year, and graduate students apply after beginning their graduate work. Applications should demonstrate both academic scholarship and chapter service. Before receiving their stipend, applicants are required to provide proof of registration in at least 50 % of a full load of courses as part of an English degree program. Should winners not be able to provide such verification at the beginning of the fall semester following their application process, their awards will be presented to runners-up. Awards are usually determined by March 31 and typically are announced at the annual convention. Each chapter may nominate one active junior, senior and graduate member for each of these three scholarships.

Regnery Endowed Scholarships ($2,500 each)

The Regnery Endowed Scholarships differ from the Junior/Senior/Graduate ΣΤ∆ Scholarships: the Regnery requires applicants to submit, in addition to the application information and scholarship essay, a paper originally submitted as coursework, with endorsement from the professor for whom the paper was written. Students may submit a collaborative paper, but each collaborator must supply all application information, and collaborators must split the stipend should they win. Awards are usually determined by March 31 and typically are announced at the ΣΤ∆ annual convention. Recipients may hold no other scholarship concurrently. Each chapter may nominate one active member (or group of collaborators) for the Regnery Scholarship.

Study Abroad Scholarships ($2,000 each)

The Study Abroad Scholarships are for active, undergraduate ΣΤ∆ members to be used for the purposes of studying for an academic term or year in a certified, undergraduate program outside the country in which the nominating ΣΤ∆ chapter is located. To receive their scholarships recipients must verify that they have arrived on-site (an official letter from the Resident Director of the program is acceptable for this purpose). Applicants should demonstrate academic scholarship and chapter service; they should also explain the relevance of their study abroad program and activities to fostering the discipline of English, including literature, language, writing, and literacy. Study Abroad Scholarships are determined in two stages: by March 31 (announced at the ΣΤ∆ annual convention) and by May 1. Scholarships awarded in March can be used for study abroad from January 2005 through December 2006; scholarships awarded in May can be used beginning Summer 2006 through Spring 2007. Each chapter may nominate one member in each annual cycle for these scholarships. Deadlines are October 30, 2006 and March 30, 2007.
